Really a Revolution?

  • For gaming, this mouse falls short on sensitivity, a major drawback for hardcore FPS fans.
  • The super scroll is a bit too quick for the likes of gamers who need some control.
  • It's cordless and there is little lag time, which is a good.
  • The bottom line: For basic gaming, a good choice, but best left for general computer use if you want to take full advantage of all that this mouse has to offer.

Gaming mice  can make a major difference in the PC gaming experience and are often more effective for gameplay than conventional controllers or gamepads.  While certain games work better with a gamepad or a steering wheel,  lovers of FPS games  (First Person Shooter), should opt for an optical mouse. Here's why:

  • The precision and accuracy of an optical mouse make every move count.
  • Improved ergonomical designs make playing for hours on end more comfortable and less straining.
  • More buttons with a better arrangement make accessing various in-game features as easy as it is on a gamepad.

What to Look For

  • Tail or no tail
    • Wired mice are great if you play for many hours at one sitting because they don't require batteries or recharging. Running out of juice in the middle of game play is a major downer.
    • If your routine is to play in spurts on an hour or less, then a wireless mouse  may be the right choice for you since it eliminates the cumbersome cord and allows you to play from the comfort of your couch should you wish to do so.
    • Cordless mice are best when combined with an easy to swap battery (Logitech G7 Laser Wireless Mouse ) and/or a longer battery life (Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse ).
    • Keep in mind that cordless models will cost a bit more than their wired counterparts.
  • High Resolution
    • To get the most precision and accuracy possible, look for high movement resolution and movement detection technology.
    • Getting technical, 1600 dpi  is the high-end norm but 2000 dpi  could soon be taking the market by storm.
  • Compatibility
    • First, make sure the mouse is compatible with your computer operating system, whether it be Mac or Windows based.
    • Second, if you are a lefty, check to see if the mouse is not just meant solely for right-handed gamers.
  • Weight
    • You want a mouse to be heavy so that it maintains solid contact with the desk at all times.
    • Some models, specifically the Logitech G5 Laser Mouse,  provide a way to adjust weight the mouse weight to improve its performance depending on the gamer's preferences.
  • Extras
    • Programmable buttons, adjustable sensitivity levels and tight scrolling are extras to keep an eye out for.

On a side note, there has been talk about Belkin's "speedpad"  and the n52,  which are basically a hybrid keyboard and precision mouse in one. These are unconventional and definitely something to try out if you are into speed and versatility.
