Flip Flops Buying Guide

Flip flops  are the ultimate shoe of convenience that can be worn during any season at any age. They are comfortable, easy to slip on after rolling out of bed, and many are very economic. Flip flops were originally confined to beach and pool areas, however, today it is very common to see flip flops paired with jeans,  shorts  or even a skirt.  Flip flops derive their alliterate name from the sounds they make while walking. This is because flip flops lack a back and and stick to the ground after every step. If an open toe shoe has a strap or a backing, it is no longer considered a flip flop.

Flip flops are most often made of plastic,  rubber  or leather.  Rubber flip flops are usually the most inexpensive and many people consider them to be the most comfortable. However, rubber flip flops are not known for their durability. Many do not usually last for more than a year or so before the straps break. Flip flops may also cause your feet to be exposed to the elements since your heel isn't covered. The amount of flip flop styles are endless... Check out your choices!

Types

There are two main types of flip flops:

  • The slide  is a shoe with no backing and a band  across the toes. Often these shoes have lots of rubber cushioning  at the bottom and are worn by athletes before or after sporting events.
  • The thong  is characterized by a "V" shaped-strap that separates the big toe and second toe.

Styles

The concept of flip flops may seem pretty basic, but in fact there are alot of colors and styles out there for you to choose from. See a basic breakdown below.

Comfort Flip-Flops 

Since flips are known for giving relatively little ankle support, many companies now design their shoes with some extra padding  and comfort cushioning  on the bottom. While the design may be a little thicker than your standard size flip flop, they are still stylish in varying colors and can be easier on your feet.

Wide Strap Flip Flops 

As the name suggests, these flip flops have a wider strap size that covers more of your foot. It can change the look and style of your shoes and make them easier to walk in since there is less chance of your foot slipping out. Wider straps can also be made out of all kinds of different materials besides rubber, such as leather  or denim. 

Wedge Flip Flops 

The wedge flip flop adds height without sacrificing comfort. They feature a large, platform style bottom and are designed for women, men, and children. Wedge flip flops can come in a range of heights and with lots of style options.

Decorative Flip Flops 

Flip flops can feature a variation of colors,  embellishments  and patterns  that are especially fun for girls and women to wear. Rhinestones, sequins, flowers and just about any other decoration can be added to your shoes to make them pretty. There are even kitten heel flip flops  for the ladies to add a little touch of sophistication to your summer wear.

Size and Comfort

  • When picking out your size, make sure not to go too big. Some flip flops offer two sizes in one, such as 7/8, but be sure to try them on first--they might be too big on your foot, causing you to trip or have trouble walking in them.
  • Similarly, going too small can also be a problem. Since there is not much protection for your heels when wearing flip flops, if a shoe is too small, your heel will definitely be hanging off the back and thereby exposed to whatever dirt is on the ground. Make sure the shoe fits!
  • Some flip flop straps may be uncomfortable when rubbing against your feet. Rubber  is usually the best strap material since it fits comfortably and won't chafe. Other heavier materials might be unpleasant to walk in, so make sure you can wear them without a problem before purchasing!
