Bike Chains Buying Guide

Bike chains  are essential to the mobility of the bicycle They are what allows the pedals to transfer power to the drive-wheel of the bicycle. There are different sizes and different speeds. They also wear down at different rates, so it is important to know what bike chain to buy in order for your bicycle to function properly.

Sizes

  • Bike chains come in a variety of roller widths. They are normally 1/18", 3/32", or 3/16".
  • Chain lengths must be long enough so that the chain can be shifted into the biggest front chain ring and the biggest rear cog without jamming.
  • For single-speed bikes, the chain length has to match the distance between the crank and the rear hub and the sizes of the front chain ring and the rear cog.
  • Chains wear down over time. The length of the chain will stretch out and cause jamming in the bike.
  • Measure your chain from time to time to see how much the chain has stretched. If the rivet is under 1/16" past the mark, don't worry. If the rivet is between 1/16" and 1/18" past the mark, it is time to replace your chains.

Maintenance

  • Oiling your bike chains can be a controversial act. Many experts think that the oil can make the interior of the chains gritty; but not oiling the chains means running a high risk of getting soil and dust grinded up in the chains.
  • If you do choose to oil your chains, use a spray and aim at the end of the derailleur cage. This will reduce the risk of getting overspray on your tires and rims.
  • Lubrication is also needed on your chains. Most factories lube the bike chains already to make sure it permeates the nooks and crannies of the chain. But after long journeys in harsh conditions, remember to re-lube.
  • It is also very important to clean your chains. Remove the chains and let them soak in solvent or use a brush that is made especially to scrub the chains.
