Autumn and Thanksgiving Decorations
Autumn
and Thanksgiving decorations
are more or less interchangeable, although anything with a turkey
on it can be safely assumed to pertain to Thanksgiving only. Decorations can range from the subtle to all-out, and depending on your living space, it's completely up to you as to how you want to decorate it. Keep your home looking cheery and bright with a range of decorations suitable for the season.
Shopping Tips
- Space: Consider how much space you have to work with. You don't want to overload your shopping cart with decorations and then find you can't fit them all in your home.
- Fake or Living? If you are buying a wreath made of fresh flowers,
keep in mind that you will have to buy one the following year also. If you find decoration shopping tedious or time consuming every season, maybe you want to consider fake flowers or fruit so your pieces will last you a few autumns.
- Budget: Seeing so many pretty decorations can make you want to overspend- save yourself the headache by planning out your budget ahead of time.
- Set Up: Make sure your outdoor decorations are placed outside before it gets too cold. Also, mid to late September is usually a good time to start putting up decorations, indoors and out.
Indoor Autumn Touches
The colors of the season are always a good choice when it comes to decorating. If you're not big on super-bright orange and red, try deeper shades of the same. Other dark, rich colors are also appropriate--hunter green, royal purple, espresso brown. Glints and gleams of shiny gold
add a little pizazz; just don't overdo it. Don't go too dark, either--you don't want your living space to feel claustrophobic. Cream-colored accents
lighten up an area, candles
will add a homey touch, and mirrors can make a room look bigger. You don't have to switch up everything in your house to acknowledge the change of seasons; a few touches here and there will do just fine. Also, don't forget about texture--tassels
and fringe
can be a great way to add it without going overboard on luxe.
Outdoor Autumn Decor
Not all autumn evenings are bone-chillingly cold. And even if you're mostly entertaining indoors, the outside of your house should look appealing too. A sheaf of wheat can look very nice outside, but you can also put smaller sheaves in vases indoors. Most of these decorations work well indoors or out--if you plan to use them outdoors, make sure they are weather-resistant.
Turkey!
Inquisitive, sociable and beautiful, turkeys are the enduring and edible mascot of Thanksgiving. For a little something extra, try adding a few turkey tail feathers to a dried flower arrangement. A framed print of a realistic turkey is beautiful year-round. If you prefer more whimsical decorations, there are plenty of stylized turkey items on the market as well. Gobble gobble!
Flowers and Fruit
Don't forget about all the growth that's happening around you this fall. Pinecones,
acorns,
pumpkins,
squash,
gourds
and cranberries
are some of the fall trends when it comes to decorating. Also maple leaves,
asters,
crown of rays,
and burgundy
or orange roses
are great for complimenting the season. You can be creative when it comes to these decorations; some people may choose to make their own crafts and combine some of these elements, while others may buy them in the store. Either way, keep in mind that great flower arrangements and artfully assembled fruit can add some life to your fall display.
