Montgras Carmenere 2007 750 ml

Rated 90 - Here's one of the standout Best Buy reds of the season out of Chile. There's welcoming grapeball and sweet berry aromas mixed with olive and tobacco. The feel is smooth and medium-deep, and the blackberry and plum flavors are just right. Barely herbal, with a long finish. Carmenere in its simple glory. - Wine Enthusiast

Authentic Chilean style. Dark almost purple core with deep sooty red at the fringes. A blend of concentrated blackberry and plum softened by some red fruit character. Distinctive dried herbal and white pepper spice character. A superb balance of full fruit, good acidity, sweet French oak, and full tannins on the long lingering finish. Cutting edge grape coming into its own a premiere producer.

Las Casas 2007 Carmenere, Maule Valley
Las Casas 2007 Carmenere, Maule Valley

Until the 1990's Chilean wine producers thought that this grape was Merlot. Carmenere is originally from Bordeaux and has many similarities to Merlot and Cabernet but with a supple character and a peppery, tobacco-y spice. This wine is from the high elevation vineyards of the Casa Donoso Estate in the Maule Valley, where there are ideal conditions for growing Carmenere. Soft but lively, supple but spicy and fruity. It shows intriguing character of the signature grape of Chile. A great value.

Chile, Valle Central, Santa Rita, Carmenère 2008

What a bargain! We were amazed at the quality of the 2008 Carménère from Chile's Santa Rita winery. Carmenère is the "lost" grape of Bordeaux - taken to Chile in the 1850's, before the phylloxera root louse devastated the vineyards of Europe. While Carménère was never replanted in Bordeaux, it thrived in the Central Valley of Chile and was long mis-identified as Merlot. The Santa Rita "120" Carmenère shows remarkable character and style for so affordable a red wine. Deep ruby in color, it has a...

Veramonte Primus (Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot)

Once a widely planted variety in Bordeaux, Carmenère was all but forgotten after the phylloxera outbreak in the 1880s virtually wiped it off the European wine map. The happy news is that someone carried the vine (also known as Grande Vidure and Grande Carmenet) to Chile in the 1850s. At that time, Chile was welcoming a wine renaissance. The aristocracy was moving to the countryside with the vision of creating a wine industry to rival Europe's.
